It is done. If that is not the correct Latin, I apologize, I've never studied it formally...or at all. If you're wondering I refer to the master's thesis that has been keeping me from most everything the past few months.

This is the briefest of entries, but at least there is something here.

Ok, so I know it has been ages. I have a decent excuse though, I have been (finally) writing my thesis. The deadline is November 11, so I kind of needed to concentrate. I have given in to so many distraction the last year, I tried to cut myself all from most internet ho-ha. I even denied myself WoW for the last month.

I've been in St. Louis for the week visiting a high school friend. It is nice when you both have grow up and beyond the confines of the small world we knew and you both still enjoy each other and each other's spouses.

I've been discovering the appeal of St. Louis, Missouri. I thought they were living here more under familial obligation than anything else, but there are good things here, too. Yes the place is filled with right-wing conservatives that aggrecate the shit out of them and me, but I will get to the good things.

First, the St. Louis Zoo. It is a free public zoo with an extraordinary collection of beasts. They have a beautiful new primate exhibit and we got to watch the chimps for quite a while. All the primates are adjusting to their new outdoor facitlities, so those are the only ones who were out and about today. They have numerous big cats with nice enclosures and a number of other African savannah creatures. They have hippos and Indian elephants and penguins and bears and none of the creatures looked miserable. Unless you exclude the kodiak and polar bears, but its summer in Missouri; its just plain hot!

Today was also topped iwth a visit to the public art museum. There is just too much to see there. We looked at the bottom floor and were fulfilled. I was disappointed that the Meso-American pieces didn't have more interpretation. But I suppose there isn't as much understanding of the cultures nor the representations. And I believe I got to see a piece I had to write about in my Art Appreciation course in college, in person! An Assyrian bas relief from Nimrud of the Winged Genius! I was rather excited....

And another cool thing in St. Louis: The City Museum. It has an enormous set of human habittrails. Designed for children's entertainment, but large enough for the adults to chase after them. It was oodles of fun following my friend's 7-yr-old niece up and over and around and through. There is also a lasrge installment outdoors with rebar tubes and everything else. What an adreneline rush to clamber across the wing of a decommissioned lear jet to and arching rebar tunnel suspended 5 stories up! I am so coming back for that attraction alone.

I must get sleep now. Tomorrow we do the obligatory Arch and Bud Brewery trip. It is cliche and must be done.

Ok, been a while. I have been sucked into the World of Warcraft. Oh well. I can talk to people there, sort of.

I sniped this poll from kierajeng. It is interesting when you're honest with these little polls how well they can define you.

Preview information

Just got back from watching the Serenity preview and Batman Begins. The movie wasn't so bad, I've definitely sat through worse (Kingdom of Heaven). Actually the movie was good. The best of the Batman movies. But, on to the point of the post: Serenity.

The preview was the one we know and love, available online at present. It is great to see it on the big screen! But it seems a little odd to have so many reviews embedded. I wish that there were just a straight action preview. I am sure there is, we just won't get it here in West Virginia.

I, being the pest that I am, went to talk with one of the managers to see if the preview is playing with any other movies, whether they will be getting pre-screenings, whether they have a release date. Just generally pestered him for information. This was not a vain attempt. He saw the preview for the first time when the got batman Begins in and was impressed. He didn't have the release date printout, but would have an updated version next monday. The other useful tidbit he gave me was that, as a smaller market theater, only get big release movies. However, if we send email inquiries to the company president via their website to show him there is interest, we can get it sooner. I keep my fingers crossed that I can motivate enough people to send email.

Now to indulge my geek for the rest of the night: World of Warcraft.  I have become one of those MMORPG dorks...I admit it.  BUt i get to hang out with my friends from all over the place this way.  Yes my friends are dorks, too.    Me and my geek friends don't need you!

Batman for Serenity!

Tonight Jake and I are going to see Batman Begins in the theater. I the main reason is to see the Serenity trailer on the big screen! I am very geeked for that. I am also gathering information.  kierajeng has been watching the threads on FireflyFans.net.  She alerted me that Universal may release Serenity before September 30.  Oh happy day!!!

According to various sources a shiny new trailer for Serenity is being shown with Batman Begins with a different opeing date (July 29).  I will attend the questionable film and report back here.

Well. They did try to send me home with a pat on the head, so I made a fuss and talked with the service manager for 45 minutes. He called the guys in Grand Rapids got their story, and about shit a brick when he was told that if the current fix doesn't work they would have to replace the engine harness. Which is replacing and rewiring all the wiring connection on the entire engine. Basically a three day job, at a minimum. He checked the posts from the GM site and saw nothing about it.

I keep hoping that the new fuel filter is the real solution. Sometimes the simplest things can appear to be horrible. Let us hope that now is one of those times. At least I know that its not a problem with the transmission, but rather the computer getting confused of gunk getting in the fuel or clogging the filter. We'll wait another month and see what happens. Well another week, if its like the last time.

News from Saturn

Share
Edward
Again I am posting from the internet station provided at a Saturn dealership. The wonderful little "Service Engine Soon" light has turned on. This after the visit here June 1 when he said, It should be all fixed now. So much for all fixed. Not only is the light on again, it has done the little not idling properly trick. They are taking it out for a test drive, but you know what, it won't be reproducible. Its not something the machine does on a regular schedule, just whenever it feels like it.

Jake had a good thought that there might be something in the fuel filter. Since the bad idle has occurred since the last trip, I told them that they must change the fuel filter. Who knows if that will fix it, but it will at least eliminate another potential cause.

Aarghh! I am just pulling my hair out, but I am trying to stay calm and pleasant. However, if they try to pat me on the head and send me home with out any answers, they'll be in for a different version of me. That version is the phone bitch that was utilized for any customer service issues when living int he house with 7 people in Houghton. I haven't had to pull her out much lately, and the last time I was so angered by the chauvinistic condescension that I had to hang up, rather than leaping through the phone to strangle the little twit. But I think I am prepared now. I've been thinking about what to say all day.

I'll have an update when I get out of here and on my way.

June 10th, 2005

Yesterday I discovered that I missed the sale of tickets for the Serenity pre-screening. I had planned on calling the theater in Columbus on Wednesday. Didn't do it. The tickets went on sale midnight Thursday. I might have had warning or even opportunity to get some if I had actually called like I planned. So my procrastination cost me this pre-screening. Jake thinks that since the demand is so high (sold out in 10 min.) that they'll do another round. I will try to be patient.

But my depressed trolling of the Firefly fan sites did net me a cool new place: ThatWeirdGirl.com. Anyone who randomly gets "Fish heads, Fish heads, Rolly-polly fish heads, eat them up. Yum!" stuck in their brains is great in my book. So go check out her site if you're bored.

June 6th, 2005

So I finally finished the methodology chapter of my thesis. Its not great but its done. I thought of a bunch of things I could add last night while I wasn't sleeping, but this is just the first cut of being finished. But the point is, I allowed myself to get started with World of Warcraft. At least that was the intention.

I spent Saturday afternoon loading the game, all 4 disks. Luckily, I have a laptop where I can access the internet during the tedious inbetween time. After that I attempted to create an account. Oh this authentication key has already been used....so I call my brother-in-law, the source of the game. Yes, he made an account for the trial period, but canceled before getting charged. Unlocking his Jedi in Star Wars Galaxies was way more interesting that starting up some level 1 schlep. So even though his account is gone, I can't use the old authentication key. So I go to the Billing Dept. as the webpage directs, and discover they're closed on weekends. If you have a MMORPG going constantly, don't you kind of need 24 hour support for everything? So now I wait for 9AM Pacific time when they open for business. I've got an email in to them, but I think I will call the 800 number as well. They wasted my time, I'll waste theirs.

The part where they really wasted my time was after my brother-in-law gave me his old login. It worked enough for me to spend another hour and half downloading patches. Then I was informed that the username was invalid. I suppose it saves me from having to do all that downloading whenever I do get an account, but you shouldn't give me the false hope.
